Coaching and Learning Institute
of Portland, Oregon (CLI), is an organization of professionally-trained
life coaches who foster youth success at school, at home, and in
relationships with adults and peers. We help young people who are
facing challenges to make powerful decisions based on their strengths.
CLI uses positive, developmentally-appropriate life coaching techniques
and activities in individual and group settings. We also train staff
and volunteers at existing youth-serving organizations, including
schools, in our approach. Coaching and Learning Institute was recently
featured in a nationally-distributed U.S. Department of Education
publication for its work with Portland Impact's Youth MAP program.

Jacqueline Raphael, CLI Founder
Jacqueline Raphael is a certified life coach with a passion for
helping young people succeed. While an undergraduate at Yale University,
she served as a mentor and tutor at various New Haven youth programs.
After graduating with a BA in English, magna cum laude,
she worked for two years in Boston as a paralegal. She then went
to Tucson to study at the University of Arizona's well-known creative
writing program, where she received an MFA in fiction. Jacqueline
spent several years as a community college writing instructor and
a creative and expository guest writing teacher for elementary and
secondary school students. As an education writer, she co-authored
several books and many journal articles on math anxiety, science
education, and creative writing groups.
Jacqueline Raphael continued to write about educational programs
at The Urban Institute, a nonpartisan policy think tank in Washington,
DC. She also taught poetry-writing to middle schools students through
the DC WritersCorps program and began studying the work of writers,
artists, performers, and educators committed to providing young
people with avenues for self-expression, clear communication, and
a strong self-concept.
Since arriving in Portland Oregon two years ago, Jacqueline has
worked at the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, where she
focuses on fostering collaboration between teachers and bringing
a student voice to educational reform. Jacqueline also received
her life coaching training at the Centre for Coach Training in Portland
and at Coach Training Alliance in Denver, Colorado. Now a certified
life coach, she combines her interests in education and self-expression
to help young people realize their potential.
Jacqueline Raphael, founder of Coaching and Learning Institute of
Portland, Oregon, spent part of her first year assisting Portland
Impact, a non-profit dedicated to serving low-income families and
youth in Portland, Oregon, with its Youth MAP mentoring program.
When the leaders of Youth MAP wanted to include goal-setting activities
in their mentoring program, Jacqueline offered the services of Coaching
and Learning Institute, which applies professional life coaching
approaches to youth mentoring. With the assistance of CLI and Jacqueline
Raphael, Portland Impact and the Youth MAP program developed used
effective goal-setting activities for the mentors and the youth.
